New Lecture: Decarbonization of Industrial Processes

21.03.2024 von

From the coming summer semester 2024, the Institute Simulation of Reactive Thermo-Fluid Systems (STFS) will be offering the joint course „Decarbonization of Industrial Processes“ in cooperation with DLR for the first time. The lecture will take place at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and will be transmitted digitally and interactively for the module at TU Darmstadt.

The specific topics will be explained in the lecture while in the project part deeper qualitative and quantitative analyses will be performed. The projects will focus on specific industries and their option to reduce their carbon-footprint and achieve climate goals. The focus is on the decarbonization of heat as a crosscutting technology and the steel, chemistry, cement sector – each having specific challenges. The main contents of the module are:

1. Introduction

2. Techno-Economic Analysis

3. Pinch Analysis

4. Renewable Energy Hub Design

5. Industrial Heat

6. Steel Industry

7. Chemical Industry

8. Cement Industry

These lectures are supported by exercises on techno-economic analysis, Pinch Analysis, energy hub design and Carbon Capture and Use (CCU) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The decarbonization techniques learned will then be applied as part of a study project.

This lecture is aimed at students of the Master's program.
